The Virgin, depicted from the hips up, holding the Holy Child, are sculpted three-dimensionally, and attached at the back to a vertical, rectangular marble panel. The Virgin sits up with her head slightly tilted forward, her left arm cradling the Child, and her right arm crossed over her lap with fingers resting gently on the Child’s right foot. The Child’s left hand holds his mother’s hand; his right arm and hand reach forward playfully. The Virgin wears a dress and hooded gown attached at the neckline, draping over her hair, arms, and lap. The Child’s body is swaddled in a garment, revealing his legs and feet. Flat marble haloes rest on the figures’ heads. Both the Virgin and Child’s gazes are down toward her hand and his feet. Winged angels are carved into the marble panel on either side of the Virgin’s head. Their eyes seem to roll up under their lids and their mouths are slightly downturned into grimaces.
