According to a manuscript note that accompanied the painting, in the collection of a family of Belgian counts, Belgiosi (?) in Milan, descended from the Contessa Ricciarda through marriage to the Conte Defieri (?).
By inheritance to Veneziani, Florence.
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from a dealer (?) Veneziani, Florence on 2 April 1903 for $1500 through the painter Joseph Lindon Smith (1863–1950) to whom it was recommended by the scholar and collector Charles Loeser (1864–1928). (as Bernardino Luini)
