Crucified Christ (from a Processional Cross), early 14th century
Copper alloy (bronze), with traces of gilding, 13.7 x 14.2 cm (5 3/8 x 5 9/16 in.)
This copper alloy or bronze figurine with traces of gilding depicts Christ on the cross wearing a cross and a loin cloth. The cross is mainly a dark bronze color with some gold in the creases where details are carved. Christ wears a traditional crown under which he has long hair that goes back his shoulders. The face is minimally detailed, with a mouth, nose, and eyes. His head hangs down, angled slightly towards our left side. The ribs on Christ are etched and Christ has holes in each hand and his feet. The crucifix is wider around Christ’s hips and his body makes the shape of a cross without any material cross visible behind him. The back of the crucifix is hollow with visible signs of age and casting.
