This large (11 feet square) handmade Flemish tapestry from the early sixteenth century is an outdoor scene filled with plant and animal life with a central drama of workmen listening to a proclamation from a group of aristocrats. The tapestry is worn and faded so that the color palette is more pale pink, blue, blue/green, tan, and off white rather than the more vibrant colors of nature.  Most of the human figures are organized in a large circle within a picket fence. The more richly dressed group is on the left side. They are surrounded by fruit trees. The only nobleman wearing a floor length robe is leaning on a ladder and plucking fruit from high in a tree with a long handled picker.  A central well dressed figure in a short robe stands to his right and reads from a long piece of paper as he gestures toward a group of men positioned below him. The listeners are dressed in simple, working clothes and caps and carry hatchets, scythes, sacks or hoes over their shoulders. They listen intently, in contrast to the richly dressed figures in sixteenth century European garb who look around, gesture, or converse with a nearby person. Outside of the orchard on the right side of the tapestry, there are two well-to-do couples who are hunting with falcons. A distant river, hills, and a village can be seen in the background. Flowers, a pet dog wearing a collar, a garden gate, and a large house with a blue roof and an arched door are also visible. The tapestry is bordered with curving, twisting, stems, leaves, flowers and bows on a pink background.
