German, Southern Germany
Ewer, 15th century
Brass, 38 cm (14 15/16 in.)
This ewer, or pitcher, has a long, elegant spout and handle. Both the spout and handle are zoomorphic; that is, shaped like fanciful animals--possibly, a leopard spout and a large-billed serpent for the handle. The ewer has a long, narrow neck and similar pedestal at the bottom. The middle is spherical and holds the water. The piece has a dent on the bottom front and is tarnished.
