Two Console Tables (Console), mid 18th century

These two Italian console tables date from the mid 18th century and are constructed of painted walnut and pine. The front center of the apron hangs downward with detailed carvings of leaves, flowers and shells. The cabriole legs have two curves and are also carved with leaves, flowers and shells. They sit on claw-like feet. The tabletop is smooth. The original blue paint can be seen in areas where the varnish has chipped off. With age, the varnish has made this paint appear greener than originally intended.

Commentary
This pair of wall tables represents the Venetian Rococo in the sensuous curves seen on nearly every profile. While relying on Loius XV models, they reflect a spontaneous adaptation of French forms and decoration. The original blue paint can be seen in areas where the varnish has chipped off. With age, the varnish has made the light blue paint seem greener than was originally intended.
