This disc shaped stuff box has, on its lid, a circular watercolor double portrait bust of the Emperor and Empress of Brazil, Dom Pedro and Maria Leopoldina. The young couple are shown in three-quarter view, with the emperor posed in front of his wife and to her right. Dom Pedro is wearing a dark blue tunic with laurel leaf embroidery, gold epaulets, and military honors including sashes, pins, ribbons, medals, and jewels. His youthful, medium-light skinned face contrasts with his stiff upright posture and ceremonial costume. He has curly, light brown hair and thick sideburns that continue into a small, closely trimmed, pointed Van Dyke beard and mustache. He has large, round, brown eyes, a prominent forehead, and a very small mouth. Both the emperor and his wife have chubby cheeks. Maria Leopoldina has light skin and tight, strawberry blonde curls that frame her face and her ice blue eyes. She is wearing a white turban with blue trim and three layers of white ruff that hide her neck entirely. Little more of her clothing is seen, except for a diagonal sash of sky blue over a brown studded jacket and red epaulet. The background of the portrait shows a dark curtain partially pulled back to reveal the lower section of a large, white, architectural column on a gray pedestal. Surrounding the portrait is a narrow, black border containing repeating gold double fish hook designs. The tortoise shell sides of the box are decorated with other regular, small, repeating designs including stars and snowflakes.
