This small, detailed silver fish is a 19th Century German perfume bottle. Where the head meets the body, the fish has four hinges, the bottom allows the bottle to be opened and refilled with perfume. The three others attach to fins two fan shaped side fins and a top fin that curves along the outline of the upper body of the fish and is scored with oblique grooves. This fin can be raised to open the bottle. The fish sits on the bottom hinge and the narrow fin behind. The head of the fish is shaped like a sideways triangle with a ring, possibly a handle, piercing its most lateral point. The lower jaw of the fish has a hinge which allows the mouth to open and dispense perfume. Semi-precious amber colored stones have been imbedded as eyes. An etched band runs along the top, bottom and posterior parts of the head with miscellaneous other small etchings. The body down to the tail is covered with semi-circular, slightly raised silver decorations, seemingly representing scales. The caudal fin, or tail of the fish, is bifurcated with top and bottom triangular shaped lobes scored by rows of parallel lines. This realistic looking fish camouflages well its function as a perfume bottle.
