This sophisticated silver 17th century candlestick has a lower section is shaped like a pleated skirt that gradually flows into a ribbed circle on the round base. This section attaches at its upper end to a plain, polished, tapered, silver cylinder that connects to a bowl form through a narrow, round pedestal. The silver bowl is decorated with more curved pleats or ribs. The ribbed sections are interrupted by two regularly spaced, projecting human heads. The upper bodies of these figures are dressed in loose flowing robes. They curve and disappear as they form the base of the bowl. The heads have idealized, classical faces with delicate tendrils of unruly curly hair. They are flattened at the top to form semi-circular platforms that extend away from the bowl. These flat platforms are pierced with round holes to support candles. The silver bowl has a layered lid that echoes the pleated, column form of the base. It ends in a small silver flame-shaped finial. The candlestick includes an odd, silver halo form hovering over the finial. The halo is attached to one side of the bowl by a long, plain, thin silver tube. Attached to the tube is a chain that ends in another flame shaped decorative piece.
