This painting, done in egg tempera on a wooden panel, is a three-quarters view of Mary standing while holding her toddler son, Jesus. In this rectangular painting the two figures are surrounded by a tooled gold leaf background enclosed in an architectural wooden arch with decorative triangles in the two upper corners of the painting outside of the arch. The mother and son are both light-skinned. They look into each other’s eyes, their heads in close proximity, his head capped by tight blond curls. Mary holds her son in the crook of her left arm so that he is in a seated position with his back straight. Her right hand lightly touches his right elbow and her left barely grazes his bare left foot. Jesus holds firmly an apple against the center of his chest with both hands. Both figures are dressed in richly gilded scarlet gowns. The sleeves of Jesus’s undergarmemt match the lining of Mary’s dark robe patterned in stylized gold roosters. A light headcovering frames her face and is pinned at her right shoulder. This headcovering has a border of red hatch marks alternating with hexagons. There are circular, gold tooled halos around both figures’ heads. The gold leaf is worn and reveals patches of the red clay bole undercoating beneath it.
