Chasuble Fragments, mid 17th century
Silk, metal, and linen brocade
These two, vertical textile fragments are Italian. They come from a chasuble, a sleeveless outer vestment worn by a Catholic or High Anglican priest when celebrating Mass. They are made of silk, metal, and linen brocade with floral and leaf motifs throughout. The first fragment has a red background with gray, metallic flowers and leaves with tan borders. The second fragment has a deeper red background with floral and vine motifs outlined in yellow with gray, metallic center accents.
