This rectangular photographic print in the vertical position is a bust portrait of James Russell Lowell. The print is in brown tones. Lowell’s head and upper body fill about two-thirds of the card. He is positioned forward but his head and gaze are slightly to our right. He is light skinned with medium-colored hair that is parted in the middle with just one lock hanging over his forehead. He has a mustache and beard that covers much of his cheeks, lips, and chin. He wears a medium-colored jacket buttoned at the top with a vest and white shirt beneath. Around his neck he wears a thin chain with a watch hanging from it.
