The shapes of the lion’s snout and open mouth, raised nose, puffy cheeks, deep-set eyes, and bushy eyebrows are realistic, as are the chisel marks around his mouth suggesting whiskers. The beast’s mane is more stylized, with curls of various lengths flowing backward over its neck. The curls appear to have been sharply chiseled leaving rows of hair-like fur, as if they had been groomed with a comb having thick, widely spaced teeth. A round hole is in the center of each curl, perhaps the result of a drill. The lion’s ears are denoted by a simple oval with a raised rim. The lion’s short front legs are holding a human head in their paws, while the beast’s lower jaw is pushing the back of the head. The person’s hair is suggested by markings similar to the lion’s mane, while the silhouette of their face can be discerned from the profile of their nose and mouth. The remainder of the human body is not articulated, but rather merges with the vertical marble base.
