Possibly a gift from the American artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) to Isabella Stewart Gardner, 1917-19.
Commentary
John Singer Sargent worked on his mural cycle “Triumph of Religion” at the Boston Public Library for twenty-nine years. Isabella followed her friend’s career closely and often collected photographs of his recent work. This photograph shows the mural “Dogma of Redemption: Trinity, Crucifix and Frieze of Angels.”
