Web Commentary
During Isabella’s lifetime, German composer Richard Wagner was at the epicenter of the classical music world. This photographic print illustrates a musical salon in Bayreuth, where Wagner hosted an annual music festival. He is surrounded by luminaries such as composer and pianist Franz Liszt and opera singer Amalie Materna.Isabella admired Wagner’s work and went to great lengths to see his performances. She traveled many times to Bayreuth and attended his operas in the United States and Europe. She displayed this print in the Musicians Case in the Yellow Room along with other collected scores and librettos.
