This is an autographed print of a black and white photograph of the famous opera singer, Nellie Melba. It shows her standing with her left shoulder moved slightly forward. She looks directly at the viewer, although the right half of her face is in shadow. Curly hair frames her face above her ears. Her expressive eyebrows and deep-set, clear eyes lead to a long prominent nose and unsmiling closed lips. Her complexion is smooth and pale. Her face, however, is dwarfed by her large, flowered hat and enormous ruffled scarf.  The brimmed hat has several plate-size white flowers decorating its crown, making it larger than her head. Her multi-ruffled white scarf with black edges drapes over and completely hides her shoulders and most of her neck. It extends down to her slim waist and up past her ear and over one cheek. Her long sleeved, ankle length, light colored walking dress is patterned with pale botanical forms. The bodice and sleeves are trimmed with lace. Melba is supported by a closed parasol that she holds parallel to her body in her right hand. Her name and the date 1899 are handwritten across the lower edge.
