This small, shallow, rectangular, metal box advertises its contents as ball point pens produced by patent holder H. Hewitts. On the top of the box from the bottom left to the top right is an arched black banner with red lettering that reads “BALL-POINTED PENS”. In the top left corner created by this banner is an elaborate shield shaped coat of arms with a white cross with a red background on the shield portion and a bejeweled crown sitting on top. Along the bottom of the lid, broken only by the start of the black banner, is a red banner with black lettering that reads in two rows “BALL-POINTED PENS/ H.HEWITT’S Patent” Between the red and black banner is an image of four overlapping gold coins shot through by an arrow and hung on a golden string. The background to the entire lid is a pattern of pale green stylized botanical forms on a light yellow background. The front of the box is visible in the photograph. It has the same green and yellow background, but is otherwise just text.  The title is written in red and reads “PATENTS” and then there are five columns of information, in order- a county, a number, a month, a date and a year. Everything is written in black except for the day of the month.
