This delicately painted Japanese screen depicts a scene of rice cultivation in spring and summer. The small human figures are surrounded by a landscape of mountains and a small village. Rectangular sections of land are divided by short walls, some have plants inside and some look to be smoother, perhaps filled with water. Several people are scattered throughout these rice paddies. Some workers harvest the plants with animal-drawn machines, others work by hand with various tools. Several people carry baskets over their shoulders and four people lean against a railing overlooking the rice fields. The buildings on the right hand side of the six panels are each only one level and the doors are open to show people inside. The trees and mountains surrounding the rice fields, buildings, and people are large and curve into the scene like active parts of the village life.
