Web Commentary
William Amory Gardner, Isabella Stewart Gardner’s nephew, decided to write In Greece with the Classics while traveling through Greece in 1905. In the book, William Amory, or WAG as he was called by his family, translated writings by ancient Greek authors that described ancient sites in Greece. He hoped people touring Greece would read his translations while visiting Greece: a combination of a guide book and a Classics lesson. A founder of the Groton School in Massachusetts, WAG taught mathematics and Latin to several generations of Groton students.
