This oval miniature painting is a bust-length portrait in profile of a sumptuously dressed man. He is facing the viewer’s left. His shoulders are angled less acutely than his face so we see both upper arms and his complete chest. His long, straight nose, brown eye, eyebrow, and ear are prominent compared to his insignificant, unparted, unsmiling lips. HIs beard, mustache and eyebrow are walnut colored and well trimmed. The care lines and crow’s feet around his eye add maturity to his otherwise unblemished light brown complexion. He is richly dressed in robes of gold cloth with small repeating stylized flowers. He wears several necklaces of pearls with jeweled pendants. His brown hair is mostly hidden by a turban of striped gold and gray bejeweled fabric held in place by a thin band of pearls and by a thicker jeweled band that is similar in decoration to his costume and necklaces. A dark tassel projects jauntily from the center of this band. The sitter’s surroundings are undefined except for a lance-shaped element that could be the back of a small chair in which he is seated. It is gold and decorated like the man’s clothing with pink, white and green floral designs. The remainder of the background is painted greenish-brown.
