This 17th century snuff box, made to hold smokeless tobacco, is fashioned from a mixture of straw and plaster. This small, shallow, cylindrical box is a light olive green color on the sides and a darker olive green color on the lid.  A light beige colored rim  encircles the perimeter of the lid and is decorated with a darker brown, continuous chain studded with flower-like shapes.  In the center of the lid is an oval rimmed with a light beige border in which the phrase, “I love to please,” has been inscribed in French in dark brown. The center of the oval is decorated with a loop of pink flowers and light beige leaves. On both the lid and sides round circles, lighter than their background, are scattered throughout. The bottom of the box appears to be unpainted, being straw (beige) colored, with a lighter beige stem with two leaves and a pink flower in the center. A number of lighter beige round circles are scattered around the surface, similar to the lid and the sides.
