This black, cast iron fireback is square with a curved top. It is solid black and molded with an elaborate coat of arms. It shows a pair of rearing animals flanking a rounded form in the center that is divided into four parts by a cross. One part shows three fleur de lis arranged in a V shape and another shows a harp or lyre musical instrument. The other two sections show multiple small animal forms that are hard to distinguish by species. The upper center of the fireback has a crown topped with a small lion-like animal in profile view. Curving acanthus leaf forms fill the rest of the curved top and lead to a football shaped knights helmet that nests into the central, divided circle previously described. The largest elements on the fireback are a large rearing unicorn to the right and an equally large crowned lion to the left of the central circle. The animal's chests and front legs rest on the central form but their rear legs curve back toward the periphery making space in the lower section for a scrolling horizontal ribbon form that contains a few words in French: NEU ET MON O. The center of the ribbon form has a large fleur de lis. Below it, separated by a horizontal ridge, there is a plain rectangular section with an inscription. It says Oxford 1746.
