This gold Japanese coin is called an ichibuban. It is rectangular in shape and is molded with decorative forms on both sides. One side has a stylized botanical design. Two of these designs are stacked vertically with some decorative tracery around them. The other side has small Japanese characters in the upper right corner and larger characters arranged vertically in the center. The border has a sequence of raised gold balls that gradually transform into semi-spheres and then into smaller portions of a circle until they almost disappear into a line at the lower right side of the rectangle. On the side with the botanical design, painted in black is the collection number, "M18e48."
