This is a horizontal engraving of George Sand. She is shown from her hips up, turned slightly to our right with her arms folded and resting on a marble ledge. Her head is turned so that she looks directly at the viewer with a solemn expression on her face. She is medium skinned with dark eyes and eyebrows, a long nose and small lips. Her hair is parted in the middle and she wears a headband that has large velvet bows that fall over each ear. She is dressed in a full robe with billowy sleeves and a high-collared white blouse. Her left hand is visible, and she wears a ring on the pointer and middle fingers of that hand. At the top is printed: ‘George Sand’. Printed in the lower right is: ‘L. Calamatta/ ad vivum delineavit/et sculpsit. Paris 1840’.
