At the bottom center, light falls on his knee where he rests his easel. His right hand hangs down at his side, with a cigarette between its fingers. His light-skinned face, though partially obscured in the dark etching marks, shows a strong nose, a bushy moustache, short hair, and narrow, downturned eyes. There is a section of the etching in the lower right quadrant that indicates a patterned floor, perhaps parquet. Above, in the upper right quadrant there is a second figure, resting in a chair with bare legs stretched out in front of them, and otherwise enshrouded in a dark cloth. The atmosphere in the room is generally dark, with one source of light coming in from the top, on our left. On the back of the piece there is another etching depicting a certain Mrs. Cleveland. The black ink linework is much thinner, softer, and sparse. We see a light-skinned woman in an elegant, light-colored long dress with a low neck, sitting cross-legged and slightly turned to our left, her right. Her hands are clasped and resting on her knee. Her dark hair is cut relatively short and wavy, complimenting her dark, arched eyebrows and large eyes. She is gazing into the distance above us and to our right. Her lips are parted as if immortalized mid-speech. The rest of the ambiance appears well-lighted, with her silhouette and the chair she is seated in casting a shadow on the wall, to our left.
