In this half-length portrait, a full-bearded man stares directly at the viewer. In his left hand he holds a pen with which he is making a mark in a book or tablet being supported by his right hand. The darkly etched lines of his jacket continue above his left shoulder. The right side of his torso, and the wall behind him on the right are indicated by just a few lines. There is a signature in the bottom left corner of this etching.
