This is a pencil study for a portrait of Isabella Stewart Gardner. Sheis seated and positioned in the center of the paper. The outline of her body is minimal. Her facial features are suggested by shading, her hair is pulled into a severe bun and a feathery headdress is placed on the crown of her head. Dark vertical lines to the viewer’s left make up a cape that continues onto the reverse of the chair. Her hands, fingers folded are resting in the middle of her lap. Her shoes peek out from under her long dress.
Gift from Anders Zorn to Isabella Stewart Gardner, 1894.
