This pencil sketch depicts a young Isabella Stewart Gardner, seated off center to the viewers right. Her hair is tightly pulled back. Her eyes looking towards the viewer, very thin eyebrows, forehead, nose, closed mouth, right cheek and chin are all in shadow on the viewers right side of face. The left side is mostly white with the exception of a few lines on the cheekbone. She wears a long dress with a V-shaped collar that comes to a point towards her waist with flowing butterfly short sleeves. Around her neck appears a single jeweled necklace. Her arms follow the form of the dressand are clasped at her hips. Her fingers are interlaced and rest on a crossed knee. The background is drawn simply, and pencil hatching indicates an interior scene.
