This very small vertical etching shows a man seated, from the waist up. The man is turned to our right and is glancing down at a small object that he is holding up in his left hand. The object, which is flat, horizontal, and rectangular, appears the size of a letter. The man has light skin, a mustache, a short beard, and a prominent nose, and he wears a dark coat with a white pocket triangle. Behind him, to our left, is a dark wall. The man and the wall behind him are rendered mostly with a thicket of dark diagonal lines. However, the rest of the background behind him is light, containing what looks like a window or frame with a lightly sketched, almost cartoonish figure in it. The artist has signed the work in pencil in the lower left margin.
