This vertical- shaped etching by the artist Anders Zorn has a wide border and shows a light skinned older man, with a long face. He sits behind a desk upon which is placed a small, headless, classical sculpture of a nude woman. Zorn’s remarkable use of thin, vertical light lines laid next to each other, form various textures in the billowy shirt with a large collar worn by the subject. There are carefully rendered lines depicting his pointed beard and flared mustache, and in the background, volumes of books are rendered in fragmentary outlines. Anatole leans slightly forward and to our right, resting on his left arm. He looks intently at the viewer. The light falling from our left illuminates his right cheek, right eye, beard, nose and collar. On the lower right corner is the artist’s signature, and a further inscription is written in pencil under the print.
