This busy sketch depicts many figures and objects associated with music-making. To the viewer’s bottom right is a large square area with vertical squiggly lines suggesting text or music. A cello bow dips into the upper left corner of this square. Behind it is the pegbox and neck of the cello, along with the top part of a harp. Above the right corner of this square is the bust of a mustachioed man with long hair past his shoulders topped with a feathered cap. Behind him we see the torso of a woman holding an open book, her neck and head cut off by the top of the sheet of paper. In the upper left quadrant of this drawing are two figures shown only from the torso down. One has on trousers, the other a full but short skirt and both have legs positioned as if dancing, with the right foot pointed in front of the left. Below these figures are a series of hatch marks and next to those are two smoke stacks with dark billowing smoke curling up towards the top half of the drawing and next to the cello neck and harp. On the left bottom corner of the drawing is Degas’ signature.
