This etching depicts a scene of human figures in a forge. The figures in this room are surrounded by darkness with the exception of the bright light coming from the left, created by the open furnace. What immediately stands out in this etching are the three central figures standing in front of the open furnace, who are watching the fire. These men have lots of detail, in contrast to the other figures within this room. One man, most likely the blacksmith, is facing left and stands erect, ever so slightly leaning back from the heat. His left arm is at a right angle at his hip and his other arm reaches out, tool in hand, to stir the fire. He wears an apron and a tall hat. Hidden away in the shadows, to the left of the blacksmith, a woman’s face appears in the shadows. The two men behind the blacksmith, to our right, wear wide brimmed hats. Both quietly gaze into the fire. One man has a relaxed stance and his hands are in his pockets. The other is leaning on some sort of tool on top of an anvil. To their immediate right, and through a doorway is a quiet room with a table and hanging tools on the wall. The fragmentary figures of a woman, a child and a man in a hat on the far right are barely sketched in. The artist’s signature is etched on the lower right.
