The straight span of the bridge transects the print horizontally in the center of the paper. While the road, in the foreground on the lower left, is perpendicular to the bridge and intersects it at an almost right angle. The wide, shoreline road is lined on each side with tiny street lamps, leafless trees, fences with open gates and pedestrians moving through them. The road itself is dotted with cabs, carriages, and carts all drawn by horses as the road progresses under one of the three arches of the bridge supports. The figures and objects are all represented as minute, dark, shadowy smudges. The river runs through two sections of arched bridge supports on the right side of the scene. The bridge, like the road, is full of activity: there are carriages, horses, and pedestrians using it to cross the river. Vague, light shading in the upper third of the print indicates the sky and distant land. The artist has signed the scene in pencil in the lower right and left with his distinctive butterfly mark.
