This lithograph is a portrait of Emile Zola, the French author. The ink is black against a cream paper background. Zola is seated and turned slightly to the viewer’s left. His gaze is downwards, as if he is reading something held in his lap. Heh as a high forehead and dark hair that is slicked back. He is bearded and wears small round eyeglasses. From the neck down, his garment is a loosely rendered triangle. The artist’s signature is present in the lower left.
