Kimono with a Tanuki and Marsh Design, about 1850-1900
Silk tabby woven with creped yarns, resist-dyed and painted, 149.9 x 126.4 cm (59 x 49 3/4 in.)
Japanese tan silk crepe kimono. There is a painted pattern of a tanuki (Japanese racoon dog) among black bamboo reeds on the lower left front side of the garment. The tanuki is looking up and behind, towards the top right front and back of the kimono, where a white moon is painted. There are black bamboo reeds on the front right sleeve, the back of the left sleeve, and on the lower back of the kimono. The collar lining is a bright red.
