This silk garment fragment is about 19 inches square. One side is rounded at the corners. The patterned silk has sprays of flowers interspersed by small scenes with figures. There are enormous red-orange tulips, carnations, roses, and other fanciful blossoms with stylized green stems and leaves. The figurative scenes are in a much smaller scale and are less colorful. Near the straight side here are two copies of a fountain that has a cherub figure on a central plinth with two figures to either side standing in the fountain itself. Offset, below the mermaid scene and closer to the rounded edge, there are two copies of a castle on a hill with a duck on a pond.  Below the castle scene, there are two copies of three flying birds chasing a butterfly. All the figurative scenes are in a darker tones of the beige background color but they are enlivened by gilt threads.  he patterned silk is bordered with two intertwined, serpentine strands of silver gilt trim. The trim attaches the patterned silk to a backing of plain, blue/gray silk.
