This tiny, round, Japanese ivory box has lacquer decorations. The lid is white with a gold design in three concentric circles. The innermost design is abstract: three large, gold, comma-shaped elements interlock, their heads nearly touching in the center of the lid and their tails curving as they trail and touch an adjacent comma. They form a visual display of circular counterclockwise motion. The middle lid design is a pair of large, crane-like birds fly with wings outstretched. Their realistic feathers are surrounded by long, curved, golden needles of various lengths. The outer lid design is a thin dancing gold line of curlicues, spirals, and squiggles interrupted by three, small, six-petaled flower heads spaced at regular intervals. The lid fits on a shallow, round box of vanilla colored ivory. The only decorations visible from the side view are regularly spaced, small, gold circles that form a band on the lower edge of the box and another on the side edge of the lid. The box has narrow, tripart, ivory feet.
