Provenance
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner (as part of a set of matching lions, museum nos. SOn5-6) from the marble mason and dealer Francesco Dorigo, Venice for 3,500 lire in about 1897.
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
