Probably from the palace city of Madinat al-Zahra built a few miles outside of Cordoba by the caliph Abd al-Rahman III (891-961 AD).
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from an unknown dealer in Seville for $200 before 4 November 1904, through the painter Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950). Two never arrived to Boston. (with museum no. S8e8)
