This textile had a functional purpose as a church officiant’s vestment in the 18th C. The pattern in the fabric shows vertical strips of undulating, lacy, white ribbons intertwined with large, orange, spikey flowers and fruit. The ground color is dark green. The straight side of the semicircle has a wide border of a different floral silk. The border silk contains a profusion of chaotic sprays of similar orange flowers with curving green stems and leaves set against a pale blue ground. The two fabrics contrast in that the smaller piece shows a jumble of flora in every possible orientation while the larger section has the flowers and fruit neatly organized in vertical columns of identically placed serpentine, climbing blossoms. The two sections are joined with a straight piece of brown trim. The outer curving edges of the garment are trimmed with thinner gold trim.
