Likely woven as a furnishing fabric at a French royal workshop, probably the Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory (active 1664-1940) or possibly the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins (active 17th century-20th century).
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the French dealer and tapestry collector Edouard Larcade (d. 1951), Paris for 38,000 francs in about February 1907.
