This dark stained, oak wooden storage chest has intricately carved scenes of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus and four saints on the chest-front.  From the front and top, the chest is a horizontal rectangular, longer than it is tall.  The chest rests on a plain wood base with a decoratively carved molding on the baseboard top.  The lid or top of the chest is not carved, but has a carved border similar to the baseboard, and the chest front has a plain wood border on the sides and at the top meeting the lid.  Within the plain front border are five side-by-side, vertical rectangular niches or panels, each with a standing figure and carved into the wood with a small depth of space.  Each niche is delineated by carved columns with a floral motif, and each figure appears to be standing under a tabernacle or tented awning between the columns. Cherubs stand on top of each column holding drapery that flows down each column side and behind the central figure in each niche, and small human figures appear from the waist up out of parapets, or perhaps chimneys, above the awning in each niche. The small human figures appear to be musicians and perhaps knights, guards, or workmen.  Above each awning top is also a carved animal head, perhaps a lion or bear.  The scenes, from left to right facing the chest, depict full standing figures:  first niche, far left - a male saint with a bishop’s hat, holding a cross, facing our left and blessing a small kneeling child; second, center left - a long-haired male saint in belted robes, facing our right, holding perhaps a chalice or scroll;  center and third - Mary in draped robes and a head covering, holding baby Jesus;  fourth, center right - a female saint, possibly with wings, in draped robes and head covering, holding an open book in one hand and a small tower or tabernacle in the other; and fifth, farthest right - a male saint in a bishop’s hat and draped robes, facing our left, holding a staff in one hand and possibly blessing a group of small children with his other hand.  There is a crack in the wood across the front, roughly a quarter height from the lower baseboard and at the knee level of the standing figures.
