This large, round, stone frame window is called a Gothic rose window. This particular one does not have any glazing. Its outer frame is about six feet in diameter while in the center it has a circular, wreath-like frame about one foot in diameter. Inside the one-foot frame there is a small motif made with six small circles arranged to look like the petals of a flower. Connecting the two frames is radiating bar tracery, which resembles spokes in a wheel. Each bar or spoke is in the form of an architectural column with a base – on the central circular frame – a shaft, and a capital. There are fourteen columns in total. Each shaft has a different elaborate decorative pattern, and each capital a different type of leaf and flower ornaments. Each pair of columns is topped by a pointed arch with a trefoil open design, totaling fourteen arches pointing towards the outer frame. Filling in the remainder of the window is another set of slightly larger fourteen arches. They rise from the outer frame and their vertices nestle into the spaces between the smaller, column arches. This last set of arches each contains a circular open form with a unique motif, including star, flower, wheel, animal, and others.
