The Apocalypse, 1416-1422

The full title of this piece is “The Apocalypse: Saint John’s vision of the Almighty with twenty-four elders.” All the figures in the scene have light skin. In the narrative, an angel gives John a glimpse of heaven. In the bottom corner to our left, the angel speaks to John. The angel has one finger pointing to the image of God, in the top center of the piece. An angel hovers to the top left of this image. John is sitting with his hands held out. Directly to the right of St. John and the angel are the elders, in groups facing each other. The elders wear colorful robes and crowns, and some play musical instruments. Above the elders, on each side of the base of the divine image, are two heads of wild animals. To our left of the divine image are pairs of torches in vertical position. Above St. John’s head, to our left, is a partial image of the opening in a thick wall, the wall surrounding the city of Jerusalem. At the bottom of the image is a horizontal band of green, the River of Life.
