This Italian Cope from the early 16th Century is made up of the semi-circular cape-like expanse worn around the shoulders and back of the priest or bishop when officiating. A semi-circular flap, which becomes a hood when worn, covers the neck hole. The large back semi-circular expanse is made of voided and cut (i.e. with a soft feel) dark green silk velvet adorned with three rows of pomegranate encircled by multi-lobed ogival shapes (i.e., ovals pointed at the top), made with gilt yarn. Small gilded rosettes arranged to mimic the top of the ogival shapes separate each row of pomegranates.  Lining the straight border of the dark green body of the cope is a wide, beige with touches of blue, linen band--the orphrey--which when worn, forms two vertical panels down the wearer’s front.  Although seriously deteriorated and difficult to discern, each side bears three rectangles containing scenes from the life of Christ which have tentatively been identified from left to right (or bottom left to bottom right when worn) as: Christ healing the woman with an issue of blood; Christ healing Peter’s mother-in-law; Christ about to be stoned; Christ driving the money-changers from the temple; Christ and the woman taken in adultery; and Christ blessing the Children. The beige hood illustrating the Coronation of the Virgin, has a slightly darker beige border and fringe around it with a short red-toned tassel hanging from its center. Each scene is framed by a gilded border with geometric shapes and the entire panel has a continuous thin gold border.
