Virgin's Crown, 19th century
Metal, 22.9 x 19.7 x 14.6 cm (9 x 7 3/4 x 5 3/4 in.)
This is a Spanish crown of the Virgin Mary made of unspecified silver-colored metal. The lower band of the crown that sits atop one’s head has six medallions, each carved with a leaf motif. There is a shell above each medallion. Two opposite sides have a piece that extends below the band to the ear. Each piece has a graceful leaf carving and rays that point outward. Four graceful panels extend above this band. Each panel has a large floral decoration and is bent to create an empty circular space above one’s head. There is a small plain cross at the top of the crown.
