This engraved portrait of Charles De Sévigné, son of a prominent French writer, is filled with extravagant flourishes, all in black and white. In the oval center there is a bust-length, three-quarter profile portrait of Charles. His  face is turned slightly to the right, surrounded by full, wavy medium light hair, cut in bangs with the rest flowing down to mid-shoulder length. He is light-skinned and has finely plucked eyebrows over heavy lidded eyelids and almond shaped eyes. His narrow, long nose rises slightly towards its tip, below which his cupid-shaped, puckered lips give a very dainty impression of his face. His slender neck is mostly covered by a light-colored, slightly scalloped, perhaps lace fringed neckline of his shirt, fastened in the center by an oblong darker fastener. A lush dark, wide fabric, perhaps satin, loops around his neck and falls down over his front. Full, long sleeves of a similar fabric are seen covering his one visible arm. A very ornate faux frame has been engraved around the oval portrait. This ‘frame’ resembles an ornate physical frame, and includes many embellishments including feathers, flowers, scrolls, and rosaries. Below the fictive frame, two putti hold torches and support a heraldic crest. Behind these putti, a placard announces the subject’s name: Charles de Sévigné.
