Miquelet Gunlocks were the precursor of the flintlock, an early firing mechanism for guns in which flint against steel creates the spark for ignition. This double Miquelet Gunlock has two identical, iron mechanisms linked together. Each has two, small parallel horizontal plates screwed together by a large, almost vertical bolt piercing their center topped by a oval shaped ring to aid in turning the screw. This mechanism is affixed laterally on the back of each screw to an almost vertical, short cylinder. In front of this bolt-like mechanism, is a gap, presumably to place the ignition site of the weapon. In front of this gap is a short vertical steel plate set within a steel plate set within an ornate, thick base. Below this base, a wider, and somewhat longer horizontal steel base connects the two gunlocks. In the center of the steel base are two narrow lever-like handles which apparently activate a spring, set within the base (but not visible to us) which sets off the action producing friction and thus igniting the weapon. The linked double Miquelet Gunlock is mounted on a simple brown, rectangular wood base.
