Provenance
Created as part of an annunciation group with the companion bust of the Virgin (museum no. S27e45.2).
The two sculptures were purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the antique dealer Consiglio Ricchetti, Venice for about 1,116 lire on 12 August 1890.
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
