This small 16th century iron latch is approximately 6 inches tall. It forms, roughly, the letter F. The interior cross piece functions as a sliding, bolt-like locking mechanism. The small round handle that moves the rectangular iron bolt to the left and right is shaped like a domed, flower-head with a dozen thin, radial petals. This complex decorative element contrasts with the simplicity of the latch’s mechanism and its utilitarian, hand forged, functional parts. Nevertheless, the lock seems to have been created with care. Many of its lines are gently curved rather than squared and there is a complex, decorative, iron crown attached to the top of the F.
